Character Role Analysis

Rosalind Connage

Rosalind Connage might seem superficial at first, but she also has a deep soul and… who are we kidding? She's pretty shallow. She ends up breaking off an engagement with Amory Blaine because he doesn't have enough money or status to keep her satisfied. Nonetheless, Amory loves her so deeply that it looks like he'll never recover from their breakup.

Sure, he goes on to have another relationship with Eleanor Savage, but all the while, he can only think about Rosalind. It wouldn't be crazy to suggest that Rosalind is a stand-in for Zelda Sayre, the girl Fitzgerald wanted to win back by publishing This Side of Paradise. The strategy eventually worked for Fitzgerald in real life. But unfortunately for Amory Blaine, Rosalind gets engaged to someone else and leaves Amory feeling heartbroken forever. It's unclear at the end of the book if Amory will ever get over his pain.
