Turtle Curry Timeline and Summary

  • When Turtle's mom gets a job in a house where she can't bring any kids, Turtle is sent to her Aunt Minnie's pad in Key West.
  • It's not anything like she imagined it would be, and she's disappointed that she doesn't have a house of her own.
  • Turtle gets to know her cousin Beans and his friends (known as the Diaper Gang) a little better when they take her around town as they work. They look after crying babies, whom she doesn't care much for, but she's happy to learn.
  • Too bad she's a girl, because otherwise she could be one of the Diaper Gang. Instead she starts to make her own way, finding work with a sailor named Slow Poke.
  • One day, the Diaper Gang takes her over to Nana Philly's to deliver some food. They hate her and say a bunch of nasty things about her, but Turtle defends the old woman. She's shocked, however, to learn that Nana Philly is her grandma.
  • In efforts to get to know her grandma better, Turtle volunteers to take her lunch over there. She thinks it will be a nice bonding opportunity, but, well, think again.
  • When she serves Nana Philly her food, the old woman purposely pushes it to the floor. Turtle's surprised, but not beaten, and basically adapts the mentality that if the old lady wants to play, then let's play. She doesn't let anyone push her around—not even her grandma.
  • Turtle starts to gain Nana Philly's respect by being tough with her. The fact that Turtle gave the old woman her cat Smokey doesn't hurt either.
  • At Nana Philly's house, Turtle finds an old treasure map, claiming to know the route to Black Caesar's buried treasure.
  • She's not sure if it's real, but she enlists the help of the Diaper Gang just in case. They go in search of the treasure on an island.
  • After a lot of digging and exhaustion, they find the treasure, and—duh—everyone is excited.
  • The only problem? A hurricane is rolling in and they are stuck on the island.
  • A couple days later, the storm breaks and they are finally rescued. Back home, they sell the ancient coins they found and get $20,000.
  • Turtle's mom comes down to Key West with her new hubby, Archie, who loves her and promises to buy them the perfect house in Georgia so they get their happy ending.
  • Just as they are about to leave, though, Turtle figures out that Archie went to the bank, stole their money, and high-tailed off to Cuba. So now they have nothing.
  • Turtle and her mom are disappointed, but they figure they can stay with Aunt Minnie and get back on their feet.
  • It's no Hollywood happy ending, but at least Turtle has a home and a family.
