Pride

Utopia doesn't really have a classic villain, but it does depict various social and political problems as a kind of looming menace. In general, this menace is the current political and social structure of Europe, but at the end of Book II, Hythloday gives this abstract network of issues a single, personified identity: Pride. Pride is the villain because it causes people to care more about themselves than about others, and as a result, our political and economic systems function only to help ourselves and not to take of those in need.
