We Grow Accustomed to the Dark Setting

Where It All Goes Down

We’re about to leave on a road with little but our neighbor’s lamp to light the way; it’s a dark and spooky night, for sure. Or is it? Because Dickinson is using figurative language, we aren’t sure whether the action is happening anywhere outside of the brain.

But what does this brain-scape look like? It has quite a bit of uncertainty, which hangs around and makes things as discombobulating as a dark night with no flashlight. That’s why we keep bumping into trees and losing our footing. It sounds like a place full of the unknown, at least, until we start feeling around a little.
