Character Role Analysis

Laughing Man

The Laughing Man is really Marcus, of course, who travels through time to save Sal. He sacrifices his life to rescue the young boy and redeem himself. In this sense, Marcus finally understands empathy and compassion – values he struggled to comprehend earlier in the novel. His conversation with Miranda about his brother Anthony is a good example of his inability to understand or feel for others (48.61-71).
