If you think hiding a nail file in a cake and sneaking it into prison only happens in cartoons, think again. Eamon de Valera was one of several Irishmen sent to prison for his role in the Easter Uprising, which began on this date in 1916. De Valera ultimately sprung himself from the clink with a metal key hidden in a cake that was sent to him from someone on the outside. The crafty rebel then went on to lead Ireland as president from 1959 to 1973.
