Annie Proulx fans take note: if you're thinking about sending the Brokeback Mountain author your Jack and Ennis fan fiction, don't. Proulx, who was born on this day in 1935, hates it, and told The Paris Review that it represents a misunderstanding of the O. Henry Prize winning short story about homophobia. She's cool with it being turned into an opera, though, and even wrote the libretto for Charles Wuorinen's 2007 adaptation of the story herself.
