dec 16 Learn More The Battle of the Bulge Begins


The Battle of the Bulge began on this day in 1944. Winston Churchill dubbed it "undoubtedly the greatest American battle" of World War II (source). It was also the first time the American Army desegregated its ranks during the war. More than 2,500 African American soldiers took part in the conflict, and the 969th Field Artillery Battalion was awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation—a first for an African American division.
