President Bill Clinton was impeached on this day in 1998 on two articles of impeachment: lying under oath and obstructing justice. He was only the second U.S. president to be impeached. Who was the first? Andrew Johnson, who took over after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated and was impeached on eleven articles of impeachment—primarily for violating the Tenure of Office Act. Clinton's case was more scandalous than Johnson's: with its infidelities, wiretaps, and all-around scheming, it was basically one evil twin short of being a soap opera. In the end, both presidents were acquitted.
