feb 11 Learn More Nelson Mandela Released from Jail


On this day in 1990, anti-Apartheid activist and politician Nelson Mandela was released from jail after twenty-seven years of imprisonment. He wasn't originally called Nelson, though—his birth name was Rolihlahla. One of his teachers found that too hard to pronounce, and nicknamed him Nelson, as in Horatio Nelson, the British admiral. Given that there are at least forty educational institutions, foundations, and scholarships named after Mandela, those of us with lazy linguistic skills probably owe that teacher a thank you.
