Dead Poets Society was released on this day in 1989. Thoreau-quoting English teacher John Keating is one of Robin Williams' most iconic roles. In fact, it snagged him an Oscar nomination. It's hard to believe, then, that Dustin Hoffman was first going to play Keating. After he backed out, original director Jeff Kanew wanted Liam Neeson for the part. "Listen, boys. I don't have a hall pass. But what I do have is a very particular set of English skills, skills I have acquired over a very long teaching career…"
