may 05 Learn More Spider-Man Tops $100 Million in Opening Weekend

On this day in 2002, Spider-Man became the first movie to top $100 million in its opening weekend. In the film, the "radioactive" spider that bites Peter Parker, giving him his super powers, was part of the Steatoda genus. The film's supervising entomologist, Steven R. Kutcher, personally selected it. Steatoda spiders aren't naturally Spidey red and blue, though, so the little guy was knocked out and then painted. (Don't worry; he's fine. He got to snack on Toby Maguire.)
