nov 01 Learn More Stephen Crane Born

What does The Red Badge of Courage author Stephen Crane, who was born on this day in 1871, have to do with The Beatles? For people who bought into the whole "Paul is Dead" urban legend, a whole heck of a lot. Crane appears on the cover of the band's Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, holding his hand above Paul McCartney's head. A hand held over one's head can be interpreted as a symbol of death, like when a priest performs a blessing over a dead body. Conspiracy theorists took Crane's pose as another one of many signs that McCartney died in 1966 and was secretly replaced with a lookalike. (No, really.)
