Did a meteor shower start The Great Chicago Fire? It's one theory for what set the Second City ablaze on this day in 1871. It would also explain three other fires that started around the Great Lakes that night, too: a comet broke up over the Midwest, then—boom!—simultaneous fires. It seems more likely that a lantern started the fire, just not one kicked over by Mrs. O'Leary's cow. That's the story you've probably heard already. In 1893, reporter Michael Ahern admitted to making it up.
