Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast took place on this day in 1938. The radio dramatization of H.G. Wells' novel famously frightened listeners who thought aliens had actually invaded Earth. Just how many people were thoroughly freaked out is disputed; the number of panicked Americans seems to have grown with each retelling of the event, but it definitely set off a media firestorm, and it definitely made Welles a star.
