T.S. Eliot was born on this day in 1888. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948 and is largely regarded as one of the most significant poets of the twentieth century. He was also one of the most significant pranksters. Eliot generally terrorized the offices of his publishing company, Faber and Faber. He regularly dished out exploding cigars and whoopee cushions, and even interrupted an Independence Day board meeting by lighting a bucket of firecrackers between the chairman's legs. That's pretty patriotic for a kid from St. Louis who ended up becoming a British citizen.
