Odds of Hanging On

Were you always getting in trouble for talking in class? First of all, shame on you for being so disruptive. Secondly, congratulations—your natural instincts for networking and communication will finally pay off. A big part of your job will require you to be a chatterbox, creating and fostering relationships with the many organizations your agency will need to coordinate with in times of crisis.

You'll also be in front of groups of people frequently, leading workshops or conducting training. Introverts will have a tough time, so if you prefer to be in the background cranking out reports and updating emergency plans, this may not be the place for you.

You need to be comfortable leading, knowing what to do, telling people what to do, and exuding confidence. You know, all those things you used to get in trouble for.
