20-Year Prospect

20-Year Prospect

Unless humanity creates some kind of fire-eliminating vacuum-sealed gerbil dome for all of us to live in (unlikely, but not impossible), things that can catch on fire will catch on fire. And as long as stuff catches on fire, someone will be needed to figure out why and how and what to do next. Even if job growth isn't on fire (don't worry, we're almost through), a 6% increase in jobs is still projected by 2022 (source).

What will change is the technology used to investigate fires and improve safety precautions. From laboratory work to field equipment to fire-proofing building materials, the future is full of innovative ways to fight fire with brainpower.

We're also pretty confident that Hollywood is going to greenlight a Backdraft remake in that time period. We totally hope they use Kurt Russell again. Even if he's seventy-five, he's Kurt Russell—we'll watch him inch away from fire in a walker if we have to.
