The low unemployment rate in this field tells us that it's pretty hard to get sacked as a lens-jockey (source). Job security is good, and although you may not be earning benefits when you start out, it's something that you can definitely work your way up to. Essentially, what we're saying is that keeping this job is up to you. 

Yes, it's a relaxed, fairly simple (read: easy) job to do, but you still have to do your mega chill job-related tasks well. Double check the prescriptions you give to lab techs, listen to your customers, and do the simple stuff, like arriving to work on time. Do those and not only will you hang on to your position, but, in due time, you'll likely get a sweet promotion and benefits package.
