Common Core Standards

Grade 6

Speaking and Listening SL.6.2

Interpret information presented in diverse media and formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) and explain how it contributes to a topic, text, or issue under study.

According to this Common Core Standard, students essentially need to be able to talk about one topic using many different sources. It's pretty much the same as any writing assignment ever, except now there's a speaking component involved. Time to bust out those vocal chords!

Example 1

Here's an example lesson to use when teaching the importance of community.

Have students view the short film “For the Birds” and then analyze its content for cause and effect. They must support their inferences with examples from the film.
