Common Core Standards

Grade 5

Writing W.5.9.A

Apply grade 5 Reading standards to literature (e.g., "Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or a drama, drawing on specific details in the text [e.g., how characters interact]").

Your students were already asked to apply Common Core Standards to literature in the fourth grade, but this year they'll be asked to apply a new level of complexity to their analysis. While the fourth grade standard merely asked students to focus on individual aspects of a text, this standard tasks them with comparing and contrasting multiple details in order to foster a broader understanding.
