Physical Danger

Physical Danger

Unless you decide to play soccer like an American football player (in which case, I doubt you'd make it into the NCAA), then major life-threatening injuries are not likely in this highly aerobic sport. However, leg injuries are pretty common, ranging on the pain scale from slightly scowly to red-faced and sobbing.

The most common injuries include sprains to the ankles and knees, as well as fatigue-related pains such as shin splits and tendonitis. Of course, as in any sport, expect some sore muscles. Soccer players are particularly prone to pulled groins as well as thigh and calf strains. However, serious injuries ARE possible—including ACL tears that could require surgery or concussions from ill-timed headers (source).

To do your best to prevent injuries, take your warm-ups and stretches seriously. We mean, really seriously. You don't need to high kick like a Rockette…but it wouldn't hurt.
