Physical Danger

Physical Danger

The injuries that do happen are because you're pushing your body in one specific direction to go as close to the edge of human limits as you can. It's actually pretty interesting to see what specific events can do to a human body. To the people who aren't actually participating of course.

Unless you have a habit of running headlong into walls, objects, or runners, running injuries tend to be centered around your legs. There are standard ones you're probably thinking of: sprains, tears, and hyperextensions. How about shin splints? Ever hear of those? That's when you run so much your leg bones weaken.

You also have those ACL injuries everyone talks about, along with the Achilles tendon (that's the tendon in your leg who fell during the Trojan War), and the dreaded stress fracture. That last one is what happens when you put so much strain on the bone it just breaks. Scary, huh?

It gets worse. Tabia Charles had her career end when she rolled her ankle badly enough that the ligaments were torn clean off the bone. Injuries like this are rare, but definitely happen.

And the above are just injuries that can occur when you are competing correctly. Say you're pole-vaulting and somehow miss the bag. That's like falling out of the second story of your house.

Okay, admittedly those last two aren't everyday strains you'll encounter, but they can happen nonetheless. Be aware, be careful, and please watch where you are throwing those actual spears.
