"Yo ho! Yo ho! A pirate's life for me! We pillage, we plunder, we rifle and loot!"

Yo ho! Yo ho! A pirate's life for me!
We pillage, we plunder, we rifle and loot!
Drink up me hearties! Yo ho!
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot!
Drink up me hearties! Yo ho!

Context

This line is from the song "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)," written by George Bruns and Francis Xavier Atencio from the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction (1967).

Okay, you've gotta admit, it's a pretty big accomplishment when a song written almost 50 years ago for a theme park ride featuring creepy moving pirates ends up being featured pretty heavily in one of the highest grossing movie franchises of all time. Yup. That's the story of "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)."

The song was created back in 1967 as a little ditty that would play for Disney World guests as they boated through The Pirates of the Caribbean attraction and watched those weird animatronic pirates move around. The actual content of the song is kind of messed up when you listen to it. The pirates steal stuff and kidnap people and burn cities to the ground. Um, enjoy the ride, kids? And your nightmares later…

Okay, but then in 2003, the people at Disney had a great idea—if people loved having their kids watch pirates plunder and pillage during a 15-minute ride, just think how much they'd love it during a two-hour movie! A film franchise was born and more and more people discovered that a pirate's life might just be for them. We're gonna hope their version included a whole lot less theft though.

Where you've heard it

Even if you're never been to Disneyworld, this song is a catchy Disney staple. Probably because once you've heard the lines, "Yo ho! Yo ho! A pirate's life for me!" repeated over and over again for 15 solid minutes, there's no way you won't be quoting this once you get back home to Ohio.
