Speaker: Daryl Dixon

You better watch your mouth, sunshine.

Context

This line is spoken by Daryl Dixon, played by Norman Reedus, in the TV show The Walking Dead (2013).

You can’t fight City Hall, but you can fight the Governor—at least when the governor in question is a sociopathic madman trying to take control during a zombie apocalypse. Seriously, what's his deal? Does he have a thing for decrepit buildings or rationing?

When Rick and Daryl decide to have a chit-chat with the Governor, they encounter his adviser, Milton Mamet (a sniveling little weasel) who says to Daryl, “I don’t feel like I need to explain myself to the henchman.”

Not taking kindly to being called “henchman,” Daryl retorts, “You better watch your mouth, sunshine.” That’s a PG way of telling him to stick it where the sun don’t shine, sunshine.

Where you've heard it

You’ve heard this if you’re mouthing off to someone tougher than you, and that person puts you in your place.

There was also a recent East Coast alt rock tour called You Better Watch Your Mouth, Sunshine.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

This gets less pretentious the scarier you look while you say it. Holding a fearsome crossbow, it’s a 4. Holding a foam bat…well, good luck with that.
