Speaker: Destiny's Child

"Can you pay my bills?"

Can you pay my bills?
Can you pay my telephone bills?
Do you pay my automo' bills?
If you did, then maybe we could chill.
I don't think you do.
So, you and me are through.

Context

This line was sung by Destiny's Child in the song "Bills Bills Bills," written by Kevin Briggs, Kandi Burruss, Beyoncé Knowles, LeToya Luckett, Latavia Roberson, and Kelly Rowland from the album The Writing's On the Walls (1999).

"Bills Bills Bills" turns the whole idea of women being "gold diggers" and taking money from men (see "Gold Digger" by Kanye West and Jamie Foxx) and turns it on its outdated, sexist head. In this hit track from Destiny's Child, the girls sing about a man who takes their money and goes on shopping sprees while running up their cell phone bill. Not cool.

In this famous line from the chorus, Destiny's Child asks their prospective suitors if they can help out with various expenses. If they can't, then buh-bye. Our girls have no time for moochers.

Where you've heard it

You've heard this when you're getting serious in a relationship and they want you to help with the rent, phone, or internet bill. Guess it's time to pony up the dough or get out.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Arguing about money and personal drama is never a good look for a public gathering. Save it for a private conversation, guys.
