Good morning, Vietnam!

Context

This line is spoken by Adrian Cronauer, played by Robin Williams, in the film Good Morning, Vietnam, directed by Barry Levinson (1987).

Get ready to rise and shine, gang. It's 1965 and Adrian Cronauer has been tapped to host a radio show for American servicemen fighting in Vietnam. He starts each of his broadcasts with a very energetic and very loud, "Good moooooorning, Vietnam!" It's kind of the best wake-up call ever.

Adrian is a bit unconventional, so he quickly wins over his listening audience by performing all kinds of manic on-air comedy routines and playing rock music. His superior officers have a slightly different view of his antics, though, and they try their darnedest to get him shut down. Each time they hear his catchphrase, it's just a little reminder: Adrian is still alive and kicking and making people laugh.

Rock out to this clip.

Where you've heard it

"Good morning, Vietnam!" is one heck of a wake-up call. We challenge you to start your day with it and see how you feel. Hey, it worked for Paris Geller on Gilmore Girls.

Pretentious Factor

You might wake up the neighborhood, but you'll never seem pompous when you're belting out a nice loud, "Good mooooorning, Vietnam!"
