Speaker: Simon and Garfunkel

Hello, darkness, my old friend.

Context

This line is from the song "The Sound of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel, from the album Wednesday Morning 3 AM (1965).

"The Sound of Silence" isn't three minutes of silence. It's an actual song with haunting lyrics, and it begins "Hello, darkness, my old friend. I've come to talk with you again." This is what Paul Simon would say to his bathroom in the middle of the night, where he liked to play guitar. We're glad he never bought a nightlight, or he might never have written this classic song.

Where you've heard it

You might hear this if someone is talking to the darkness, whether literally or figuratively. (And no, we don't mean the metal band The Darkness.) This song often triggered traumatic memories for Gob in the fourth season of Arrested Development.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

If you consider yourself friends with darkness, you're probably more than a little pretentious. Go outside and get some sun.
