Source: The Matrix

Speaker: Neo

I know kung fu.

Context

This line is spoken by Neo, played by Keanu Reeves, in The Matrix, directed by Lilly and Lana Wachowski (1999).

As part of his training as The One, Neo must learn all kinds of martial arts to fight the Agents, who work for the machines and keep the computer simulation known as the Matrix running. But instead of training for years, he gets to have dozens of martial art styles downloaded directly into his brain. Batman is very jealous of him.

As he trains, Neo learns that because the Matrix is just a computer simulation, he can manipulate the environment around him. This is where all the fancy aerial tricks and bullet dodging comes in. He's basically a superhero. He even flies like Superman!

Where you've heard it

You might have said this after you became proficient in a certain type of martial arts. You did the work, so you deserve the quote.

In the season 2 finale of Chuck, our sci-fi nerd turned super-spy protagonist busts out this quote after martial arts skills are implanted in him.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Martial arts is hard work, and The Matrix is a fun movie, so feel free to use this one before your next sparring session.
