Source: Scandal

Speaker: Olivia Pope

It's me. I'm the thing that needs to be fixed. I'm the thing that needs to be handled. I'm the scandal, and the best way to deal with a scandal is to shut it down.

Context

This line was spoken by Olivia Pope (played by Kerry Washington) in an episode of the third season of Scandal, written by Shonda Rhimes and Mark Wilding (2012- ).

The third season of Scandal is filled with several soap operas' worth of drama, plot twists, and general intrigue, as it's revealed that Olivia Pope, who is skilled at shutting down government scandals, has been outed as having an affair with the president. In this season finale episode alone, there is a terrorist attack, the president's son dies of an infection, two of Olivia's employees are revealed to be having an affair themselves, and of course, there is an election still going on.

In light of all these crazy events, Olivia confides her true feelings to Jake Ballard, a CIA operative. She tells him that even though she is good at troubleshooting and shutting down problems, she is a problem herself. Pause for feelings.

Where you've heard it

You've heard this when your friend wants to drop out of her school or quit their job and find themselves. They've also maybe binge watched Scandal on Netflix a little too much.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Admitting you have issues even when you're a seemingly competent person is brave, not pretentious.
