Speaker: Kevin McCallister

Keep the change, ya filthy animal.

Context

This famous one-liner is spoken by Kevin, played by Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone (directed by Chris Columbus, 1990).

In Home Alone, eight-year-old Kevin is left home alone by his family, giving him the run of the house. He does what any kid on his own would do: sleds through the house, eats a ton of junk food, and watches an adult movie.

No, not that kind of adult movie, but a violent gangster film. Well, as violent as can be suggested in a PG-rated movie. The fictional flick is called Angels with Filthy Souls, which sounds like it could be that kind of adult movie, but in fact features a gangster named Johnny who shoots another gangster named Snakes.

As Snakes's body is cooling after being riddled with bullet holes, Johnny sneers, "Keep the change, you filthy animal." Kevin later uses sound clips from the film to order a pizza and trick burglars breaking into his house.

Where you've heard it

Johnny returns in Angels with Filthier Souls in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and says, "Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal," prompting many people to use this festive season's greeting.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Oh, young Macaulay.
