Source: Annie Hall

Speaker: Annie Hall

"La-di-da."

"La-di-da, la-di-da, la-la."

Context

This line is spoken by Annie Hall, played by Diane Keaton, in Annie Hall (directed by Woody Allen, 1977).

After a game of tennis, in which no one kills anyone (unlike in Woody Allen's 2005 film Match Point), Annie Hall is leaving the club. Alvy (Allen) tells her that she plays well, even though, during the game, she said, "I can't play too good."

Annie turns the compliment around on him and then begins rambling on and on and on. The word salad combined with the outfit is supposed to be charming.

Where you've heard it

You might get this and other famous lines of gibberish like "Yada yada yada" confused, but the two have drastically different meanings. "Yada yada yada" is what you say when you don't want to divulge all the details of a story.

"La-di-da, la-di-da, la-la" is what you say when you've said something stupid, but you just can't stop talking—like when a waiter tells you to enjoy your meal, and you say, "You too!" or if you wave to someone and find out they're waving at someone behind you...but you keep on waving.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Woody Allen might be a little pretentious, but Annie Hall, the character, is too 70s manic-pixie-dream-girl to come close.
