Source: "Thriller"

Speaker: Michael Jackson

No mere mortal can resist the evil of the thriller.

Context

This line is from the song "Thriller" by Michael Jackson from the album Thriller (1984)

Ah, c'mon. Not all thrillers are evil. Think about mountain-climbing, sky-diving, hang-gliding, and snowboarding-type folks. They're all thrilling, not a one is evil, and we know lots of mere mortals who can resist them.

But in the land of Disturbia, ghouls are so evil they'll suck your soul right out of your body. They breathe their bad breath like a spell over you. Even though you're repulsed, they convince you to go with them. Why do you do it? Because you're a mere mortal and you believe you can't resist them. But you can. Are "grisly ghouls" trying to steal your soul? Refuse to go with them. Tell them you left your future in the car and you're going back to get it…and run away from that diabolical laugh behind you.

This line, of course, is from the song "Thriller," which has survived the funk of many years. The video was also the first ever music video to be inducted by the Library of Congress into the National Film Registry.

Rising up every Halloween, it's the thing that never dies.

Where you've heard it

You'll hear this line at the end of the night on Halloween while ghouls and zombies perform the dance in town squares, shopping malls, and parking lots. It's also a big staple at weddings, for some reason. We wouldn't normally call weddings horror stories. Should we rethink that?

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

We're putting this at the low end of the scale because, out of context, this just sounds like someone at the party thinks they're a comedian. But if that someone has fangs and a wolfish look, it's not funny or pretentious. It's time to get the heck out of there!
