Speaker: Adele

But rumour has it he's the one I'm leaving you for.

Context

This line is from the song "Rumour Has It," written by Adele and Ryan Tedder, from the album 21 (2011).

"Rumour Has It" is all about—you guessed it—gossip, innuendos, and rumors. Specifically rumors about the time Adele's boyfriend left her for a younger Burberry model. Ouch. That one's gotta hurt. But instead of curling up into a ball and crying, Adele pretty much took her pain and channeled it into this awesome song about all the gossip that swirled around that breakup. You go, girl.

This quote is actually the last line of the song. Basically, Adele spends the whole tune talking about the things people are saying. This guy left Adele, but maybe he wants to get back with her. Maybe his model girlfriend is leaving him. But, now, in this last line, Adele says she doesn't need her ex. Rumor has it that she's found someone better. She's moved on, jerkface.

Let's just hope these rumors are true.

Where you've heard it

The phrase "rumor has it" didn't originate with Adele. It's just another way to tell people that "folks are saying" something or another. The rumors may or may not be true, but you've probably heard this phrase once or twice in that context before.

Additional Notable References:

  • The kids on Glee did a "Rumour Has It" mash-up with Adele's other hit "Someone Like You."
  • The musical theater folks on Smash also did a version of "Rumour Has It," because of course they did.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Everyone gossips a little (even Adele does it!), so we can't fault you too much.
