Source: This Land is Your Land

Speaker: Woody Guthrie

"This land was made for you and me"

This land was made for you and me.

Context

This line is from the folk song "This Land is Your Land" by Woody Guthrie (1945).

"God Bless America"? Woody Guthrie found that song to be a load of moose poop (our words, not his).

In response to that song, Guthrie wrote "This Land is Your Land," which took on many variations over the years, finally settling on the classic folk ditty we all know today, the one that tells us, "This land was made for you and me."

Where you've heard it

You've heard this line at your local Communist rally, or when people try to come up with a new national anthem that people can actually sing.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
