Speaker: Lou Grant

You've got spunk. I hate spunk!

Context

This line is spoken by Lou Grant, played by Edward Asner, in the TV show The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970).

She can turn the world on with her smile. She can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile. And she can't make it through the funeral of a clown without breaking into laughter. She's Mary Richards, played by Mary Tyler Moore, of course. And in the first episode, she was just starting out as an associate producer for a TV station run by the crotchety Lou Grant. Mary was just a little perky for Lou, but she grew on him over the years.

However, when Lou just couldn't take it, he could be hilarious. Lou delivered this memorable line when he couldn't take any more Moore.

Where you've heard it

You've heard this if you have a little too much energy for someone who woke up on the grumpy side of the bed.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Cranky? Totally. Pretentious? Not really. Sometimes you just can't handle perky people before your fourth cup of coffee.
