Okay, let's see… He beats his wife and children, struggles with alcoholism, and keeps a girlfriend on the side. Yeah, Apa's not doing well—and he's a major hurdle in Young Ju's life time and again. Do we feel any sympathy for him? Sure—maybe some of us can find it in our hearts to forgive Apa (Young Ju seems to at the end), but for the most part, it's hard to see Apa as anything other than the main villain in this book.
