Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. Chapter 8 Summary

  • On Friday the sixth graders get their tests back. With the right names on them. Mr. Benedict: 2, Class: 0.
  • After another reminder from Mr. Benedict, Margaret starts thinking about what exactly she'll do for her yearlong project. After a little chat with God, she starts thinking that maybe that's what her project should be on.
  • On Saturday Margaret gets to take the bus to New York by herself to go see a concert in Lincoln Center with Grandma Sylvia.
  • On the way back home, Margaret asks Sylvia if she can go to temple with her at some point. Sylvia gets super excited—does this mean that Margaret is ready to be the Jewish granddaughter she's always wanted?
  • Sylvia's enthusiasm is dampened a little, though, when she finds out that Margaret hasn't told her mom or dad about temple yet. "'Be sure to tell them it's not my idea! Would I be in trouble!'" (8.32) Sylvia says.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Simon agree to let Margaret go, but only after they first try to talk her out of it.
  • As Margaret gets ready for Rosh Hashanah, she has a quick chat with God, letting him know that she'll be looking for him. Way to put God on notice, Margaret.
