At last my Jew, intimidated, concluded a bargain, by which the house and myself should belong to both in common; the Jew should have for himself Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, and the Inquisitor should have the rest of the week. It is now six months since this agreement was made. Quarrels have not been wanting, for they could not decide whether the night from Saturday to Sunday belonged to the old law or to the new. Don Isaachar and the Inquisitor, two men of supposed religious devotion, fight over the use of Cunégonde as an unwilling mistress.

The supposedly religious Knights of Malta subject the Old Woman and her mother to a humiliating and intrusive strip search.

The contrast between the supposed religious devotion and immoral actions of the Old Woman’s attackers suggests a gap between religious standards and the actions of religious men.

Candide, petrified at this speech, made answer: "Reverend Father, all the quarterings in the world signify nothing; I rescued your sister from the arms of a Jew and of an Inquisitor; she has great obligations to me, she wishes to marry me; Master Pangloss always told me that all men are equal, and certainly I will marry her."
"We shall see that, thou scoundrel!" said the Jesuit Baron de Thunder-ten-Tronckh, and that instant struck him across the face with the flat of his sword. (15.5-9)
The Jesuit Baron is more concerned with issues of social status than with Candide’s actions and character.

As for myself, I was born in your country; this gentleman is my master, and, far from being a Jesuit, he has just killed one, whose spoils he wears; and thence comes your mistake. To convince you of the truth of what I say, take his habit and carry it to the first barrier of the Jesuit kingdom, and inform yourselves whether my master did not kill a Jesuit officer. It will not take you long, and you can always eat us if you find that I have lied to you. But I have told you the truth. You are too well acquainted with the principles of public law, humanity, and justice not to pardon us." (16.20)
Cacambo and Candide exhibit no qualms about capitalizing on their murder of a Jesuit.

El Dorado, a utopia, has a single religion, and therefore religious strife is unknown. This suggests that much of the suffering in the world is caused by religious conflict.

A fawning abbot attaches himself to Candide and Martin rather than focusing on his religious obligations. He, like everyone, only values wealth.

The abbot connives to profit from Candide, suggesting the laxity of his religious standards.

The abbot reveals that he is more concerned with personal profit than moral conduct when he tricks Candide and Martin into bribing him.

Paquette, a prostitute, has a friar as her current client. Unlike his title would imply, he is clearly not a strictly devout man.
