If you hear the words "boring" or "This is too long!" coming out of your little darlings' mouths, we can’t say we blame them. This book is long and full of detail, and it certainly isn’t a quick read—but once you get past the beginning, the plot picks up and somewhat carries the reader. You might have to encourage your students to keep with it, but once they’re engaged, there’s a lot to discuss: symbolism, relationships, what family is made of, what makes a "superior" man or woman, plot elements, great characterization, and links to historical events.

Life at the turn of 20th-century California is described in full detail: opium dens and addictions, gambling, murder, lawlessness, bullying, racism, and theft, with a one-time (but well-deserved) "SOB" thrown in for good measure. You've been warned.
