American Born Chinese is totally different from Dragonwings in some ways—it’s a graphic novel filled with a quick plot, colorful pictures, and lots of dialogue—but totally the same as Dragonwings in other ways—a Chinese American boy learns about adapting and fitting in. And there’s a huge fantasy element in both stories. - The Outsiders
In high school, S. E. Hinton observed how some kids just didn’t seem to fit in because they lived on the "wrong" side of town. She observed, and then she wrote a book about it while still in high school. It’s totally real, which means thought-provoking, relatable (even if the hairstyles, clothing, and slang are completely outdated), and not always neat and pretty. Like Dragonwings, it’s about being different and adapting.
