Character Analysis

Actions

In this book (like in life), sometimes actions speak louder than words. Just remember how Juli likes to hang out super high up in the sycamore tree—that tree climbing gives us an idea of how persistent and courageous she is. Or take a look at Lynetta's tantrums. They let us know that she's the rebellious type… and the door-slamming type, too.

Direct Characterization

The characters in Flipped tell us about themselves from the get-go. Bryce lets us know straight out that he thinks Juli has cooties, and Juli makes it super clear that she thinks her mom is a "sensible" lady… and that Bryce is just about the greatest guy ever. Sometimes we don't need to go searching for clues, because Juli and Bryce give them to us in their super direct details.

Thoughts and Opinions

Because our main characters are also our narrators, we get to hear all about their thoughts. A lot. And this gives us the skinny on what's really going on inside their heads. So no need to wonder what Bryce thinks of Juli—he's got lots of thoughts about how annoying she is, and he's going to tell us about them.

Plus, learning the thoughts of our minor characters tells us about them, too. For instance, we know Mr. Loski is a prejudiced guy because of his opinion about Juli's uncle. The thoughts aren't always nice, but they definitely help us get to know characters better.
