Character Role Analysis

Dmitri

Dmitri may not be hunting down Gustave like the other bad dudes at the Grand Budapest, but he's essentially the cause of all Gustave's problems. Plus, his mustache is super-sinister.

Dmitri, we learn near the film's end, is the one responsible for his mother's death. Dmitri is also responsible for threatening Kovacs, and for the orders that lead to Kovacs' murder. He's responsible for threatening Serge and eventually killing both him and his club-footed sister. He's responsible for getting Gustave locked up in jail through Serge's false accusation. He is responsible for ruining that marvelous Egon Schiele painting.

In short: he's a nasty piece of work.
