- Turns out there are quite a few exceptions to which tribes this act will apply. Some tribes and their lands are exempt from the Dawes Act.
- They are: Cherokees, Creek, Choctaws, Chickasaws, Seminoles, Osage, Miamis and Peorias, the Sac and Fox nation, and the Seneca Nation in the State of New York. (These tribes had pre-existing treaties with the government.)
