Horton Hears a Who! Theme of Community

Ah, the Whos. They may be barely seen (in fact, their whole livelihood exists in a tiny speck of dust), but they've got big hearts and an even bigger sense of community. When it becomes frighteningly clear that the Wickersham Brothers have some devious things in mind for them (death by boiling, yowza!) the Whos have to band together in order to make enough noise to deter those jungle meanies. And they all do—except for one little guy named Jo-Jo. But once they get him to make some noise and the whole entire community is in on that one purpose, they actually harness the power to make themselves heard. Horton Hears a Who! knows a thing or two about working together.

Questions and Answers

Questions the little ones might ask and how you might respond

Q: How do so many Whos fit on one little speck?
A: How do so many people fit on one little planet? You know, the universe is a pretty big place.

Q: Why don't the other jungle animals act nicely when it comes to Horton?
A: They don't see him as part of their community, so they treat him as an outsider. Pretty uncool, right?

Q: Why is Jo-Jo so lazy? Doesn't he know what's going on?
A: Sometimes it just takes a little Shmoop in the right direction to get on board. Once Jo-Jo is nudged by the mayor, he makes his voice heard.
