Theo Lane : Hyperion :: Captain Edward Smith : Titanic
Theo Lane was the Consul's aide when he was Consul of Hyperion. Through Theo, we learn a bit about the Consul's life on the troubled planet. He pretty much relied on Theo to get through the day. Now, Theo's hard work as been rewarded: he's now Governor-General of Hyperion, the newest Hegemony world. Or maybe it's more of a punishment than a reward. The Consul describes Theo as "The de facto dictator of five million doomed souls" (2.82). Hyperion is in danger of attack, everyone wants to leave, and we have to wonder if Theo will go down with this rapidly sinking ship.
