Lucky Jim Chapter 5 Summary

  • Next thing we know, Jim's totally drunk at the bar. He thinks about stopping his drinking, but then finds out that the bar is staying open a half-hour longer than he expected.
  • He considers this to be the greatest thing that's ever happened to anyone.
  • Later, we find Jim stumbling into the Welches' fence. That's right; he still plans on sleeping at their place for the night. People are still moving around in the house, but Jim finds a way to sneak in through a window without anyone noticing.
  • While he's doing all of this, Jim sees Bertrand kissing a married woman named Carol Goldsmith (scandalous!)
  • Before he can reach his bed, Jim runs into Margaret in the hallway. They go into her room, where Jim (who's drunk) starts kissing her.
  • She kisses back, but then Jim tries to do more than just kiss, and Margaret forces him away. He apologizes, but she tells him to leave her alone.
  • Ashamed, Jim goes to his bed and falls asleep, but not before sneaking back downstairs and gulping down half a bottle of the Welches' very expensive port.
