Major Barbara Questions

Bring on the tough stuff - there’s not just one right answer.

  1. Why is the play named after Barbara when Andrew is actually the protagonist/hero?
  2. While we are on the subject: What kind of protagonist is Andrew Undershaft? In what ways is he typical? Atypical?
  3. Why are Sarah and Cholly in the play? They don't get a heck of a lot to do, so what is their role in everything that happens? Are they just there for comic relief? Or something else?
  4. How does Lady Brit's character change by the end? Is she still as scary even after her husband and his business undercut her cred/power with the kids? How does her transition compare to Barbara's?
  5. Is the ending actually a happy one? Why or why not?
