Angie (Joe Mantell)

Character Analysis

Best Buds

Angie is another Italian boy from the block, just like Marty, or Joe, or Ralph, or George. But Angie and Marty are functional partners, best friends who adventure out together. They're less brash and sexual than their friends, and they seem to hold onto each other without even realizing they're doing it.

So when Marty goes and breaks away by leaving Angie at the dance hall in order to get to know Clara a little better? We understand the confused look of hurt that passes over Angie's face when he meets the new couple on the street. Surely, this isn't anything serious, he seems to be thinking. Marty and me are destined to be alone, together. When on Sunday, Angie pouts and calls Clara a fifty-year-old dog, is he being a jerk, or just a hurt friend who's feeling even more lonely than usual?

Thankfully, Angie's no one to hold a grudge, and even if he's the one left behind, we have a feeling he's the kind of guy who'll be first in line to offer congrats.
