When the going gets tough, the tough keep going. That's Paul's motto, and it's the Pastor's, too. They both saw spreading the word of God as an uphill climb. Sure, there will be arrests and beatings and near-death experiences and suffering and hardships—but in the end, they thought God would reward his good servants for keeping the faith.
